President’s Message:
It is impossible to avoid the media’s constant negative reports about the economy. I am pleased to report that the University Club remains on solid financial footing. Though not many businesses have been immune from the sluggish economy, your Club continues to meet or exceed its financial projections. Our General Manager, Charlie Brasby, is to be commended for guiding us through these turbulent times. Last year’s Treasurer, Gene Langford, this year’s Treasurer, Brad Kimbro, and Past President, Andy Rey, continue to provide valuable fiscal oversight. Please thank these folks when you see them because they have all helped keep the Club financially strong. Our Immediate Past President, Marsha Rydberg, provided a steady hand to lead us through what we all hope were the worst months of this cycle.
You have probably noticed some subtle changes at the Club. During the July closure, renovations occurred to the women’s restroom and some of the common areas. We had budgeted for these renovations some time ago and received some assistance from the landlord as part of the lease renewal entered last year. So, if you are concerned, that these renovations might result in a dues increase, the good news is that they will not. Be sure to come by the Club soon for lunch or a drink after work to see these renovations and enjoy the company of your fellow members.
As the Summer winds down and we head toward the start of school and the beginning of Fall, please consider the Club for your personal or business Holiday gatherings. It is not too early to make reservations at the Club. Naturally, the staff is eager to assist you not just with Holiday events but with any event you might want to host at the Club. The catering team is excited to work with you to make your event special whether it is for 4 or 400 people.
Fall is my favorite time of year. When I was in college, it was because the leaves changed colors and the air got crisp. While we don’t really enjoy those benefits here, Fall also signals the start of football season, which is the other reason I like Fall more than any other season. Monday evenings in the bar at the Club are lively. You can easily make dinner out of the hot hors d’oeuvres and the atmosphere is great for re-hashing the results of the weekend’s college and NFL football games.
DON’T FORGET: It does not have to be your birthday for you to attend the monthly Birthday Dinners. Birthday Dinners are open to all members every month. Of course, if your birthday (or your spouse’s birthday) is that month, then your dinner (or that of your spouse) is complimentary. Otherwise, please come to the Club just to enjoy the evening ambiance and the wonderful menu selections Chef Brian has selected for the evening. I attended a recent Birthday Dinner with my family and my children remarked about the different feel the Club has at night. The nighttime view is spectacular and there is no better place to watch a Summer lightning storm than at the Club.
Enjoy the rest of the Summer. See you at the U-Club!
